Photos courtsey of Bellevue jazz Festival
The Bellevue Jazz Festival is coming up this Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the second year in a row. It is diverse offering of artists, both well-known and novices, all taking place in downtown Bellevue. Featured artists for this years festival will be Dianne Reeves Strings Attached, the Mingus Big Band, Kurt Elling, Patricia Barber, Danilo Perez, and Mose Allison Trio.

I will be doing the jazz photography for the Festival this year for the first time and will post my jazz photographs photos here from every concert. I will try and get at least one photo up here on the same night after I get home. I look forward to the challenge of shooting a lot then filing the photos. It reminds me of the days when I worked for New York Newsday and had to cover the Knicks or Yankees and then drive back to the office, process my film and then edit and make a print on deadline. Seeing it on the cover at the news stands the next morning was a great reward. Now it feels the same when I see how many people come to check out my jazz photography.

Bellevue’s jazz festival history dates back to 1978 when the City of Bellevue first hosted the Bellevue Jazz Festival at Bellevue Community College. Honoring this tradition and bringing jazz back in festival form is a primary aim of the Bellevue Downtown Association. To accomplish this, the BDA has brought together a cast of more than 20 jazz experts to help guide programming for the festival.

Since 1974, the BDA has produced major arts and cultural community events, in addition to advocacy work on behalf of members, all to advance Downtown Bellevue as the economic and cultural heart of the Eastside.
The BJF starts the Friday before Memorial Day and runs through Sunday, competing with one of Seattle’s most popular and longest-running musical events, the Northwest Folklife Festival. The BJF has committed itself to a three-year run. It has yet to make money but is convinced it is on the right track to becoming a viable event.

The headline acts, which includes the addition of the hometown Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra, will perform in the Meydenbauer Center. Tickets for individual concerts range from $20 to $85. Ticket packages that allow you to see an entire day’s worth of performances or the entire weekend’s lineup range from $99 to $199.

BELLEVUE JAZZ FESTIVAL RISING STARS

The 2009 festival also marks the launch of a program to celebrate and help develop emerging jazz students. Working with a team of noted educators, the festival will present a unique high school player invitational program called the Bellevue Jazz Festival Rising Stars.

Rising Stars offers promising students from the Seattle metropolitan region the unique opportunity to rehearse with noted area musicians in a workshop environment, and then perform in a professional setting as part of the festival.

The Bellevue Jazz Festival invited 50 high school band directors from Washington State to nominate students for Rising Stars. Nominated students applied and auditioned for the program, and a panel of Rising Stars program advisors selected players to form three six-member ensembles. The ensembles rehearsed under the direction of three professional musicians from the local area. Rehearsals were hosted and facilitated by Music Works Northwest.

The Bellevue Jazz Festival Rising Stars program will culminate at the Bellevue Jazz Festival, Sunday, May 24 at 7:00 p.m. with a live performance by the ensembles at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center, as an opening act for the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra.
