Ballard Jazz Festival

May 24th, 2012

Here is some belatedly coverage of the wonderful Ballard Jazz festival. I have been preoccupied for a while and apologize for just getting around to posting these shots.
Above is Human Spirit at Conor Byrne Pub. Human Spirit is Thomas Marriott – trumpet; Mark Taylor – saxophone; Orrin Evans – piano; Phil Sparks – bass; Matt Jorgensen – drums

Todd DelGiudice Quartet was playing next door on Ballard Ave the same night at LOCK ‘N KEEL. Above are Todd DelGiudice – saxophone; Jon Hamar – bass; Julian MacDonough – drums

Another highlight of the evening was Jovino Santos Neto Quarteto playing at PARATII CRAFT BAR on Leary Ave. Jovino Santos Neto – piano; Chuck Deardorf – bass; Ben Thomas – vibes; Byron Vannoy – drums

Pearl Django was great playing at the LEIF ERIKSON LODGE. Michael Gray – violin; Rick Leppanen – bass; David Lange – accordion; Ryan Hoffman – guitar; Troy Chapman – guitar
they had a good turnout and it was fun watching people dance to their tunes in the back of the hall.

Above is another shot from Human Spirit. Wish I could have seen more. Got to the COPPER GATE just as Jon Alberts / Tad Britton / Dean Schmidt finished their last set.

Burn List featuring: Chris Icasiano, Aaron Otheim, Greg Sinibaldi and Cuong Vu

Had some time tonight to catch 3 of the twenty or so shows on the Ballard Jazz Walk, on the 3rd day of the annual Ballard Jazz Festival. Burn List put on a great set upstairs at the Salmon Bay Eagles.

Playing downstairs at the Salmon Bay Eagles was Go By Train featuring: Clay Giberson, Dan Balmer, Charlie Doggett. Another cool set with a band I have not heard before.

That is one of the great things about the Ballard Jazz Walk. You get the opportunity to stroll around and hear more bands in an evening than you would any other way.

I finished up early Friday night because I have an early starting gig on Saturday but made sure to close with the amazing Suffering F**kheads featuring Ron Weinstein on the Hammond B3 Organ with Mike Peterson playing drums at The Copper Gate.

Be sure and try and make some of the performances on Saturday, the final day of the Festival. Here is a schedule for the remaining events.

The sewcond evening of the Bellevue Jazz Festival continued with quite a number of different performances in varied venues around town. Above is the Josh Rawlings trio playing inside the new Neiman Marcus. I love the setting. The music sounded great there too,

Over at Grand Cru Wine Bar at TEN20 the Bill Anschell Duo with Jeff Johnson on bass played a great set.

For tickets and more information go to the Festival website; Bellevue Jazz Festival More Pictures to come from Friday evening.

Joe Locke Wails on the vibes at the Nordic Heritage Museum on the final night of the Ballard Jazz Festival.

It was such a busy week that I have not had time to post these photos of the Joe Locke performance. What a concert. Sorry for the delay. Joe presented a stellar quintet featuring pianist Darrell Grant, trumpeter Thomas Marriott, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop.

One last shot of Corey on guitar
Soul- jazz guitarist Corey Christiansen opened with a quartet featuring organist Joe Doria, saxophonist Mark Taylor, and drummer Matt Jorgensen. What a great Festival. Matt Jorgensen and John Bishop worked their tails off to present another really enjoyable experience of jazz in the heart of Ballard the heart of Seattle. I can not wait to see what they come up with next year.
